QT stands for QuickTime and refers to Apple's container format for audio and video files. QT files with the file extension .MOV are better known, but .qt is also used, and both formats use exactly the same QuickTime container. To my knowledge, the file extension .qt has never been officially documented by Apple. Source [1], the QTFF (QuickTime File Format) standard from 2001, only mentions .mov as a file extension. The reason for this is that, in Apple's operating systems, the file extension is not decisive for the content of the file. It was not until Windows 95 that Microsoft first documented .qt as a file extension for QuickTime files in KB178291.
Nevertheless, in 2024, Apple introduced the file extension .QTA (QuickTime Audio) for pure audio files in QuickTime containers. Here you can find more information about the QTA format, including our QTA to MP3 converter.
The QuickTime container can contain video, audio and, of course, both. When converting to MP3, only the audio track is used and the video part is removed.
